On November 10, 2017, The Library of the University of Latvia organized the event “Atom, Energy and Marie Curie phenomenon”. Main aim was to introduce the outstanding scientist Marie Curie and her family. The exhibition is displayed in the Library of Natural Sciences (Nature House, Jelgavas street 1, Riga). Professor Valdis Kalkis family was invited to this event to share experience on professor’s contribution to nuclear physics and radiation chemistry field development in Latvia. Professor Valdis Kalkis was one of the founders of the Latvian Ergonomics Society, the developer of scientific occupational health and safety, ergonomics field in Latvia.
Significantly, in 2017, in the year of the legendary Marie Curie anniversary (150), the two outstanding professors of the University of Latvia, Jurijs Tīliks and Valdis Kalkis, have anniversary as well (80). Professor of the University of Latvia, academician Juris Tīliks (1937-2007) and professor of the University of Latvia Valdis Kaļķis (1937-2014) significantly contributes to nuclear physics, solid-state radiation physics and radiation chemistry, as well as in the construction and development of the Salaspils nuclear reactor.
